Songs to Sing and Play is a collection of 46 songs compiled for use in the early stages of learning a musical instrument and are presented in a simple, child-friendly way with solfa and stick notation.
The use of solfa and hand signs helps to develop inner hearing and the understanding of tones, semi-tones and wider intervals. This can be applied to finger patterns on any instrument.
On each page there is a solfa 'ladder' showing the tone-set used in each song. The collection of songs begins with 2-note melodies, gradually building up to the diatonic scale in major and minor. The lay-out of the stick notation in solfa rises and falls as it follows the pitch of the song. The songs are grouped according to the tone-set, increasing in complexity. However, songs can be chosen in an order to suit the needs of each individual student.
There are two indexes: 1) with tone-set and rhythm patterns and 2) alphabetical.
The rhythm patterns in this volume are kept simple and include the following note values: crotchet (TA), quaver (TI/TI-TI), crotchet rest (TA rest/shh) and minim (TA-A).
There are helpful suggestions given for when using the book:
When learning a new song, When reviewing a known song and When starting to play a song on an instrument.
